Berggasthaus Gonzen is a mountain restaurant perched at roughly 1500 metres above the Rhine Valley, in the Gonzen massif near Sargans. Recently renovated, this family-run inn welcomes hikers and lovers of the outdoors in a warm, unpretentious atmosphere built around hearty, seasonal cooking. The dining room and terrace offer a sweeping view over the St. Gallen side of the Rhine Valley and the surrounding peaks. Walkers wanting to extend their stay can book a simple dormitory (Lager), open from June to September, with bunk beds and a washbasin with hot water but no shower — an old-fashioned night in the mountains. Breakfast is served from 10am, or packed to go for early starts. Open Tuesday to Saturday and Sunday until 5pm, the Gonzen is closed on Mondays.

Location & surroundings

Berggasthaus Gonzen sits high on the Gonzen massif above Sargans, right next to Liechtenstein across the Rhine. Gutenberg Castle (Balzers) is less than 5km away as the crow flies, and Vaduz Castle about 9.5km away. Access is via a mountain road from Azmoos, then on foot. The nearest station on the Liechtenstein side is Schaan-Vaduz. The inn is a popular starting point for hikes across the Gonzen massif and walks overlooking the St. Gallen Rhine Valley.
