Berggasthaus Rotsteinpass is a mountain refuge perched at 2124 metres, right on the pass linking the Säntis to the Altmann, on the border between Appenzellerland and Toggenburg. Run by the Wyss-Rusch family, Anita and Albert, the inn serves a hearty mountain menu in its cosy dining room or on the terrace, facing a dizzying panorama over both valleys. Accommodation is simple: 8 beds in rooms plus 80 further places in mattress dormitories, ideal for groups of sure-footed hikers and climbers. A colony of ibex lives in the immediate surroundings, to the delight of alpine wildlife lovers. Open from June to October (and some spring weekends if conditions allow), Rotsteinpass is a landmark stop in the Alpstein, also popular with ski tourers in winter.

Berggasthaus Rotsteinpass sits at the very top of the Alpstein, on the pass linking the Säntis to the Altmann, on the natural border between Appenzellerland and Toggenburg. The refuge is reachable only on foot, via well-marked trails reserved for sure-footed walkers, and is a key stop on the alpine route connecting the Säntis to the Altmann and Zwingli Pass. A colony of ibex lives on the surrounding rock faces. The view from the terrace stretches over both Toggenburg and Appenzellerland, one of the finest 360-degree panoramas in the region.
