The family that runs it keeps cattle, goats and chickens, and the restaurant serves its own milk, eggs, cheese and meat. The simple, welcoming accommodation consists of double rooms and mattress dormitories for up to 40 people, complemented by a neighbouring barn for groups. A terrace and communal areas let guests enjoy the calm, sunny setting, far from any road. Berggasthaus Schafboden lies high in the Alpstein massif, south of the Säntis summit, within the municipality of Wildhaus (canton of St. Gallen). Cut off from any road, it can only be reached on foot, notably via the Rotsteinpass or from the Wildhaus valley, after a two- to four-hour walk depending on the route.
