The Lawena Museum in Triesen documents the history of electrification in the Principality of Liechtenstein and is housed in the 1926 operations building of the Lawena power plant. This hydropower station was the first operated by the State of Liechtenstein, went into service in 1927, and takes its name from its catchment area, the Lawena valley in the municipality of Triesen. Today it is the country's second-largest hydropower plant after the Samina plant. Since 2011 the building has housed a museum run by the volunteer association "Pro Lawena Museum." Spread over three floors, the exhibition displays around 500 historic electrical items from 1900 to the present — household appliances, lighting and communication devices — many of which can be demonstrated in working order for visitors. A special exhibition further explores the electrification of Liechtenstein. The Lawena Museum thus combines industrial history and everyday culture at an authentic original site.
