The ruin of Schalun, popularly known as Wildschloss, sits perched on an exposed rocky ridge between Schaan and Vaduz. The castle was probably built towards the end of the 12th century, with the first written record dating from 1237. During the 13th century it was strategically reinforced through alterations and extensions, before being completely cleared and destroyed by fire in the 14th century. Its remains lie spread across three artificial terraces: a moat protected the northern plateau, while the upper plateau still preserves impressive remnants of the keep and castle core. From Vaduz, Schalun can be reached in about an hour along a steadily climbing forest track, on foot or by mountain bike. At the top, a sweeping view over the Rhine Valley rewards the climb. Freely accessible, the ruin is one of the most atmospheric hiking destinations in central Liechtenstein.
