Obere Burg, also known as Neu-Schellenberg, is a castle ruin above the municipality of Schellenberg in northern Liechtenstein, one of two ruined castles in the village alongside Untere Burg. It was built around 1200, with the first written record dating from 1348. During the 16th century the fortress lost its military importance, was abandoned and gradually fell into disrepair, becoming overgrown. In 1956 Prince Franz Josef II gifted the overgrown ruins to the Historical Association of the Principality of Liechtenstein, which has cared for the site ever since. Today Obere Burg is freely accessible and a popular destination for history lovers: visitors can explore the remains of the gate, ring walls and building foundations, and enjoy sweeping views over the Rhine Valley from the site. Together with Untere Burg, it offers a vivid impression of medieval fortifications in northern Liechtenstein.
