Berggasthaus Bollenwees is an authentic mountain inn nestled on the shore of Lake Fählensee, at 1,470 metres above sea level in the heart of the Alpstein massif. Run by the Manser-Barmettler family, it keeps alive the hospitality tradition of the Appenzell region's alpine huts. Guests sleep in simple rooms and shared dormitories, with no internet connection, for a complete disconnect surrounded by nature. The kitchen, using regional Swiss produce, also offers vegetarian and vegan options, best enjoyed on the outdoor terrace or by the fire indoors. Smoking is only permitted outside, and the inn is not wheelchair accessible due to its mountain setting. A popular starting point for hikes and climbs in the Alpstein, Bollenwees closes during certain quiet periods of the year, particularly outside the mountain season.
