Perched on the ridge linking the Ebenalp to the Säntis, in the wild heart of the Alpstein, Berggasthaus Schäfler is a mountain refuge with old-world charm. A handful of double rooms, furnished in a nostalgic, antique style, sit alongside cosy mattress dormitories, with bathrooms down the hall. The restaurant serves regional dishes and homemade specialities, welcome after a day's hike. Open only from June to October, the inn offers a particularly striking 360-degree view in the late afternoon, once day-trippers have headed back down and only overnight guests remain to watch the sun set over the Alpstein. Reachable on foot in about an hour from the upper station of the Ebenalp cable car, the Schäfler is for hikers ready to trade modern comfort for an unforgettable night in the mountains.

Berggasthaus Schäfler stands atop the Schäfler summit, in the Swiss Alpstein massif (Appenzell Innerrhoden), about an hour's walk from the upper station of the Ebenalp cable car. The ridge offers an exceptional panorama stretching from Pilatus to the Zugspitze, with Lake Constance in the distance. The trail leading there crosses spectacular karst landscape typical of the Alpstein, between limestone cliffs and alpine pastures, close to other iconic regional refuges such as the Aescher and the Seealpsee.
