Berggasthaus Forelle is a family-run mountain inn set right on the shore of Lake Seealpsee, in the Alpstein massif. Run by the Fritsche family, it offers rooms with shower and toilet, with a total capacity of around 52 guests, including a 6-bed room particularly suited to families or groups of friends. The restaurant serves regional Appenzell cuisine on a lakeside terrace, where ducks and rowing boats drift past. The inn is accessible only on foot, following about an hour's walk from Wasserauen, which keeps the setting unspoilt and free of road traffic. Open from late April to early November, the Forelle is a favourite stop for hikers crossing the Alpstein, amid crystal-clear waters and steep peaks.
